History

The Arts Politic was founded in 2009 as a “stage for political/creative thinking.” A print-and-online magazine, The Arts Politic is dedicated to solving problems at the intersection of arts and politics with inspiring stories, groundbreaking reports, enlightening interviews, needed policybriefs and politically-minded art.

Conceived at the Arts Politics graduate program at Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, The Arts Politic was developed by alumnus Danielle Kline and Jasmine Mahmoud, members of the inaugural 2007-2008 class. As it has grown, The Arts Politic has unearthed the latest cultural policy, arts activism, political art, the creative economy issues, and has created a conversation among artists, activists, scholars, policymakers and idea-makers along the pendulum of global civic responsibility.

Many emerging, established and distinguished scholars have contributed essays, interviews, visual art, and commentary, including: Jeff Chang, Edward Clapp, Dudley Cocke, RonAmber Deloney, Mayda del Valle, Arlene Goldbard, Randy Martin and Brandon Woolf. The magazine proudly integrates dialogue from among emerging and established scholars, artists and policymakers.

A forum for creative and political thinking, a stage for emerging art, and a platform for social change, The Arts Politic provides a space that is intelligent, that is visionary, that is thoughtful, that continues to TAP new ideas from the frontlines to get things done.
